Directors’ Reports

June of 2023

President’s Message

Welcome to summer 2023!  This is my last message to you, as I will not be running for a position at our AGM in August.   It has been my pleasure and honor to work on the SCCA executive for the last 14 years. I hope that in some small way I have made a difference here and have made your experience in the SCCA a good one.

Our annual barbeque will be held on Saturday, July 8, rain or shine.  We do have tents available should it be raining so we will be comfortable regardless of the weather.  Details of this day can be found in the Recreation Director’s report.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held, rain or shine, on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 1 p.m. in the Park 4 picnic area.  You can read more details about this in the Vice President’s report.

The purpose of our AGM is to update all members on what has been done during the previous year, review our financial statements and brief you on plans for the upcoming year.  It is also your opportunity to pose questions to the executive members, and make your ideas known to us and your fellow members.   It is important that you attend, as this is your community and you should know what is going on and have a say in its future.   If there are any items that require a vote, each lot owner who is up to date on their lot levy payment is entitled to one vote.  If you own multiple lots, you will have a vote for each lot owned and for which your lot levies are paid.   This is also a social occasion for us, so please stay after the meeting for our corn roast.

Election Year

This also is an election year for executive members, so we will be seeking to fill the following positions:

President
Vice President
Secretary/Treasurer
Parks Director
Recreation Director
Communications Director

All positions are available, and any member in good standing i.e. who is up to date on lot levy payments, can put his/her name forward.   Irina Jacobs, our current V.P., will be putting her name up for President.  Catherine Rutgaizer, currently Recreation Director, will be putting her name forward for Secretary/Treasurer.  Rick Benz is interested in staying on as Parks Director.

Prior to the AGM, you will receive an agenda for the AGM, as well as the financial statement for our fiscal year ending June 30, 2023.Along with this newsletter, you will find some attachments, including an agenda for the AGM.  If you have any items which you would like to add to the agenda, please send them to my attention and they will be added.

We are working on editing and modernizing our Constitution and By-Laws, which are currently almost forty years old.  There are sections which have to be changed, as they no longer meet the requirements under the new Ontario Not For Profit Corporations Act, which we have to follow.  We hope to have suggested changes by the AGM, or if not, shortly thereafter.  Any changes have to be voted upon by the membership.

Vice President’s Report

II want to wish everyone a very nice and happy summer, and would like to thank all members of the association who helped with parks clean up. Thank you for keeping our parks and beaches clean and safe.

A friendly reminder to all our wonderful members that this year is an election year for our association executive committee. We would like to see as many members as possible at our AGM on August 23. If you want to make a difference, this year is the year to come and voice your opinion and vote.   The AGM is August 26, 2023 at 1 p.m. in Park 4.  Our traditional corn roast will immediately follow the AGM.

This year two of our most experienced executives are planning to retire from their positions. Nancy and Sue are stepping down from their roles. I would like to mention that under their leadership and help from other members our community association remains strong and vibrant.   Just a few of their achievements: organizing and maintaining association finances and payments to the insurance, taxes and collecting association  fees; organizing several events throughout many years, maintaining and organizing legal papers and issues for the association; starting our own website, modernizing our constitution in accordance with a new century; and many other everyday tasks that may seem minimal and insignificant at the first glance, but essential for the function of this community and the maintenance of our beautiful environment. I would like to thank them for the amazing job they have done.

If any of our members are interested in any of the 6 positions, please let one of the executive committee that you are interested.   All positions will be voted on at the AGM, and you should have someone nominate you at the AGM during the actual election.  Bring yourself and your ideas to this meeting.

Recreation Director’s Report

Dear SCCA members! The summer is upon us, and I trust that like me, you love this most beautiful and relaxing time of the year.

As always, we value your feedback and suggestions, so please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any of the Board Members with your ideas. We look forward to seeing you all at the beach, in the parks, and enjoying our common spaces together.

Our parks and beaches are great places to enjoy nature. Walking, watching the birds, enjoying blooming flowers, and relaxing by the sound of waves are great ways to take some time off from your everyday routine, and relax, while connecting with nature.

In May we had the first community event of this year. Lunch after the cleanup of the parks was a pleasant get-together for the SCCA community members. Thank you to all who helped in the parks, and who joined the lunch. It was nice to reconnect with neighbors, meet new people, and get to know SCCA members a little better.

I am now looking forward to the Annual BBQ on July 8th, starting at 4 p.m in Park 4. As in previous years, your executive and volunteers will be responsible for the cooking of the meal.   The menu includes;

Beef and chicken
Green salad
Cole slaw or potato salad
Spanokopita
Rolls
Dessert

If you wish to bring one of your favourite dishes to add to the menu, please feel free to do so.  We always love to taste your food and see what you bring!

The BBQ is free for SCCA members in good standing and their immediate family (children and grandchildren). Cost for any guests is $5 per person. Soft drinks and water are included, wine and beer are available for a cost.

We will need some volunteer help for this event.  If you are interested in giving us an hour of your time, for setup, cooking, serving or clean up, please let an executive member know.

As your recreation director, in light of the upcoming beach season, I’d like to remind you to enjoy the beach responsibly, supervise small children, leave the beach clean, and be mindful that we share this space with our neighbors. The most important – please enjoy the season while the weather is beautiful.

Park Director’s Report

Hi everyone, first let’s say thanks to all the volunteers and parks wardens for parks clean up.  We had lots of people out and it was a success. The lunch afterwards was also fun!

As mentioned in our last email – since we have so many trees that came down in the winter, and others that are dead that need to be taken down, we have contracted the services of a professional tree removal company.  They will not only cut down and cut up the trees by the end of May, (now delayed until the middle of June)  but they will also take away all the debris in the burn piles in the parks.  We have decided that it is no longer safe to burn these large piles in our parks

We still have a few projects on the go, which include fence repair in park 3, and finishing  the rail installation on the pathway from Bluewater to park 2.   Spraying for poison ivy is ongoing, as it seems to grow everywhere here.  For our new members we have 4 parks in our community, and each park has a warden who is responsible for grass cutting and general maintenance.  Park 1 lies between Sunrise Court and Bluewater Court, and I am the warden for this park.  Park 2 is between Bluewater Court and Moonlight Court, with Wayne Humphries as the warden.   Park 3 is between Moonlight and Crown Court, and the warden is Allen Landriault.  Park 4 lies between Crown Court and Park Lane, with Bill Schumacher as our longest serving park warden there. As always, I want to say thank you to the wardens for all their hard work.

Hope to see you all at our picnic and as always, if you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me.
